For those who have been following the survey that I ran on the lifespan
of Macintosh computers, here are the final results. The survey was
available on the web, and was posted to several mail lists such as the
Evangelist. Keep in mind that this was an informal survey, and has
limited statistical validity.
Of the 2689 computers,
43.63% (1103) were 3 years old or less.
30.18% (763) were more than 3 years old, up to 5 years old.
12.90% (326) were more than 5 years old, up to 7 years old.
7.59% (192) were more than 7 years old, up to 10 years old.
5.70% (144) were more than 10 years old.
62.14% (1671) were PowerPC Macs.
37.67% (1013) were 68k Macs.
472 did not specify OS version.
Of the 2217 eligible responses,
2.12% (47) were running System 6.0x or earlier.
1.62% (36) were running System 7.0x.
5.68% (126) were running System 7.1x.
13.67% (303) were running System 7.5x.
10.24% (227) were running System 7.6x.
66.53% (1475) were running System 8.0x.
1 did not report RAM.
Of the 2688 eligible responses,
4.87% (131) had 4 Mb RAM or less.
4.54% (122) had more than 4 Mb RAM, up to 8 Mb RAM.
7.78% (209) had more than 8 Mb RAM, up to 16 Mb RAM.
20.31% (546) had more than 16 Mb RAM, up to 32 Mb RAM.
30.65% (824) had more than 32 Mb RAM, up to 64 Mb RAM.
31.85% (856) had more than 64 Mb RAM.
6 did not report HD size.
Of the 2683 eligible responses,
10.51% (282) had 100 Mb HD or less.
17.85% (479) had more than 100 Mb HD, up to 500 Mb HD.
15.65% (420) had more than 501 Mb HD, up to 1000 Mb HD.
18.11% (486) had more than 1001 Mb HD, up to 2000 Mb HD.
25.98% (697) had more than 2001 Mb HD, up to 5000 Mb HD.
11.89% (319) had more than 5000 Mb HD.
Of the 2689 total entries, 2203 (81.93%) had a CD-ROM Drive.
Of the 2203 eligible responses,
.77% (17) had a 1x CD.
18.29% (403) had a 2x CD.
.36% (8) had a 3x CD.
23.01% (507) had a 4x CD.
2.50% (55) had a 6x CD.
